Betsson Malta Ltd. is an online gambling company that offers online poker, online casino, scratch cards and sports betting. The company is headquartered in Malta and owned by the OMX listed public company Betsson AB.
History
The technical development of Betsson was initiated in the beginning of 2001, and in April 2002 Betsson got a bookmaker's license in London.[1] The site was launched in May 2002 in English and Swedish. One month later Betsson was one of the first sites in the world to launch Live betting in the Exchange. 2003 saw launches in Finland and Germany. Betsson also started its casino and more than 20 casino games were now available on the site. In 2004, Betsson grew to include Norway and the Czech Republic. In July, Betsson Poker was launched in collaboration with partner Ongame.[1]
In March 2005, Betsson reached over 100,000 registered customers.[1] The company further grew by launching in Turkey, Iceland and Denmark. In April, Betsson became a fully owed subsidiary company of Cherry.se, quoted on the Swedish stock exchange. The same year marks the start of products sports betting and mobile poker, a Java applet making it possible to play poker on their mobile phone against the same players and in the same network as on the site.
By January 2006, Betsson, including the company’s online casinos has more than 400,000 registered customers.[1] It was time for the fifth main product, Scratch Card Trio, which was launched in the summer of 2006, around the same time as Betsson's main offices moved from London to Malta. In December Betsson launched Turkish Poker in Turkey.
In March 2007 Betsson launched bingo on the Swedish market and also a loyalty program that rewards customers with points after how much they play. One month later Betsson launched live-betting in the Sportsbook. In the coming months Betsson was launched in four new countries. In May the site was launched in France, and in July in Greece, Italy and Spain.
